Hello future gardeners!

Have you ever thought to yourself, I dont have the space, time, or equipment to grow a productive garden? If you have, then trust me you are not alone. Looking at beautiful gardens in books, magazines, and videos can be encouraging, but for the beginning gardener it can make the hope of growing a beautiful garden seem like a daunting and unachievable task. For some of us, we have dismissed the idea of gardening all together because we feel we are unequipped to handle the task, or that we dont have the time to maintain a garden properly. I hope to dispel some of these ideas in this post and future post. In these post I will be discussing the Ruth Stout method of gardening and how my wife and I have implemented this method on our small parcel of land. It is my prayer that through these post you are encouraged to finally try your hand at gardening.

The method of gardening we use was invented around 1920 by none other than the Mulch Queen herself, Ruth Stout. She realized that by mulching her garden using straw or hay, she limited the amount of feeding, and weeding, she had to do to her garden. Therefore limiting the amount of time and physical labor she had to invest to maintain her garden bed. This is achieved by adding a thick layer of mulch to the soil surface and allowing that mulch to breakdown and become part of the soil structure. Purposefully mulching the soil surface provides the same benefit as fallen leaves do on a forest floor. The mulch provides ground cover to prevent weeds and unwanted grass from growing, it provides brown matter to feed the organisms in the soil, and retains moisture in the summer while providing a warmer root bed in the winter. All of these benefits add up to a garden that is easier to maintain, more productive, and less time consuming for the gardener that does not have the equipment necessary to maintain a traditional row-crop garden.
